THE VASCULAR SYSTEM

In this cross section of a branch, we can see the cambium layer between the bark and the wood. This is the living tissue in the stem, and the growth cells needed to heal a wound are created in this narrow zone.

The cambium layer is also the core of the vascular system. The vascular system acts much like our blood system, conducting water and minerals from the roots up through the tree, and sugars and carbohydrates from photosynthesis throughout the tree, in a process known as osmosis.
