The Basics of Tree Pruning

To see from a tree’s point of view we need to know how a tree grows. To do this. we need to understand the function of the Meristem Tips.

When a tree grows it develops limbs at various heights. These limbs are known as laterals. Once they emerge, the laterals never increase their elevation from the ground.

That growth occurs only at the leading tips of the branches. These are known as the Meristem Tips, or Meristem Leads, and they are the only places where the tree is elongating in spread and height.

The roots respond to this signal by sending water and nutrients to the tips, allowing the tree to thrive and grow.
When we prune, we need to preserve as many of the Meristem Tips as possible, because they maintain the sap pressure, which is the lifeblood of the tree.
