Now
that we’ve seen the basic concepts of good tree pruning, we
should take a minute to review the most important points.
- Approach
pruning from the tree’s point of view. Remove what is interfering
with the tree’s health and ideal form.
- Start
with the most egregious cuts first. Eliminate dead wood, narrow crotching
structures, crossing branches, and continually assess the form and
balance of the tree as you progress.
- Preserve
as many meristem tips s possible.
- Follow
the one third guideline, by training to a branch that is at least
one third the diameter of the former leader.
- Always
prune back to the branch collar, and make the smallest possible cut.
- Treat
the wound with orange oil/beeswax to prevent decomposition, or a gasp
of air entering the vascular system.
If
you follow these basic guidelines, you can expect to make cuts that
will heal properly, and send your trees into the future.
